M80RR x BodyGuide: Innovation in Injury Prevention

Updated: Dec 5

A new collaboration has been announced between the M80 Ring Road Completion and BodyGuide, demonstrating a strengthened focus on injury prevention.

The initiative will see pain literacy and injury prevention campaigns roll out to all workers, with a multichannel engagement program.

“Pain and body stress injuries are still the leading cause of workers compensation claims. More than sore muscles, the connection between pain, mental health, substance misuse and even suicide has been well documented. Partnering on such an ambitious project allows us to have a meaningful impact with thousands of workers, who deserve to go home pain-free.” Matthew Green, BodyGuide CEO.

The M80 Ring Road Completion is being delivered by an Alliance comprising ACCIONA, MACA Civil, and AECOM, for the Victorian Government. Spanning five years, the scope of the project presents a unique opportunity to deliver best-in-class health and safety.

“As industry leaders, we understand that injury prevention is a complex challenge. We need to be approaching the issue holistically rather than simply relying on manual handling training. We are delighted to be partnering with BodyGuide, to deliver pain literacy education to 6000 workers as part of site induction. We’re backing this up with regular toolboxes, leadership training and a sustained engagement strategy providing education and care pathways for workers." Marco Rocci, Alliance Health & Safety Lead

“We’re focused on going upstream, to address the problem at the source. We understand that behind many workplace injuries there is a history of unaddressed pain and discomfort, with workers not comfortable reaching out for support due to industry stigma and the costs of professional care. We are committed to changing this dynamic. By delivering self-care skills as part of a broader health literacy approach, we can address the cultural blockers to communication, bolstering our existing injury prevention strategies.” Tanya Borg - Health and Wellbeing Specialist (Acciona)

BodyGuide has been an advocate for change since 2019, ushering in a new, less-reactive approach to injury management. BodyGuide founder Matthew Green is passionate about connecting the dots between physical and mental health.

“In many ways, we’re 40 years behind the mental health conversation when it comes to pain. We had our first mental health awareness week in ‘85, but the pain conversation is only just starting. It’s a huge opportunity for employers to meaningfully engage the workforce, reduce costs, improve productivity and genuinely help people.

Good things take time, and the scope of this project lets us roll up our sleeves and do what we do best. We are thrilled to have found an innovative partner in the M80 Ring Road Completion, who shares our vision for a healthier, safer & stronger industry.”
